Health Providers are in a unique position to help reduce secondhand smoke exposure. Evidence supports that secondhand smoke (SHS)is harmful, that the diseases caused by SHS are preventable, and that public health policies and individual counseling are effective in reducing exposure. (see article)
The 5A's model for tobacco cessation can be used to address SHS exposure.
Union County Pediatricians, Prenatal Providers, and Family Practicioners can receive free SHS Prescription Pads to be used when counseling parents and pregnant women about the dangers of SHS. The North Carolina Quitline is an excellent resource for family members who are trying to quit. To receive prescription pads, call 704-283-3539.
